When most people picture a heart attack, they imagine what they’ve seen in movies: someone clutching their chest and collapsing. The reality is often much quieter — and that’s exactly what makes it dangerous. Many heart attacks begin with subtle symptoms that people dismiss as indigestion, stress, or simply “getting older.”
At Heart & Vascular Centers of South Florida, we’ve cared for thousands of patients across Broward County, and one thing we hear again and again is: “I didn’t think it was my heart.” Knowing the warning signs — especially the less obvious ones — can save your life or the life of someone you love.
1. Chest Discomfort That Comes and Goes
Chest pain from a heart attack doesn’t always feel like pain. Many patients describe it as pressure, squeezing, fullness, or a heavy weight sitting on the chest. It may last more than a few minutes, or it may fade and return. If you feel persistent or recurring discomfort in the center of your chest, don’t wait it out — get evaluated.
2. Pain That Spreads Beyond the Chest
Heart-related pain often travels. It can radiate to one or both arms, the back, the neck, the jaw, or even the upper stomach. Jaw and back pain are especially common in women, and because they don’t “feel like a heart problem,” they’re frequently ignored until the situation becomes an emergency.
3. Shortness of Breath
Feeling winded after climbing stairs you used to handle easily? Struggling to catch your breath while at rest? Shortness of breath can occur with or without chest discomfort, and it’s one of the most common early signals that your heart isn’t pumping as effectively as it should.
4. Cold Sweats, Nausea, or Lightheadedness
Breaking out in a cold sweat for no reason, feeling suddenly nauseated, or feeling like you might faint are all symptoms your body uses to tell you something is wrong. Women in particular are more likely to experience these “atypical” symptoms during a heart attack — sometimes without significant chest pain at all.
5. Unusual Fatigue
Extreme tiredness that doesn’t match your activity level — especially if it develops over days or weeks — can be an early warning sign. Some patients later recall feeling exhausted for a week or more before their heart attack. If everyday tasks suddenly leave you drained, it’s worth a conversation with a cardiologist.
What Should You Do?
If you’re experiencing these symptoms right now, call 911. Do not drive yourself to the hospital, and do not wait to see if symptoms pass. Every minute matters when heart muscle is at risk.
If you’ve noticed any of these warning signs recently — even if they came and went — schedule an evaluation. Diagnostic tools like EKGs, echocardiograms, and stress testing allow us to detect problems early, often before a heart attack ever happens.
